The Center for Bioengineering Innovation and Design (CBID) is a joint effort at the Johns Hopkins University between the School of Engineering and the School of Medicine to bring translational engineering to the forefront, led by the Department of Biomedical Engineering.
By building on the already strong undergraduate design experience, the design program will expand to include masters and post-graduate opportunities.
Stanley Huang, William Tam, Robert Allen, Yen Shi (Gillian) Hoe and I-Jean Khoo (not pictured) have obtained a provisional patent covering their device to measure the force used in delivering a baby. Huang, Tam, Hoe and Khoo were students in a biomedical design course taught by Allen.
A team of four BME undergraduates in the department’s annual design competition invented a wireless transmitter that measures the amount of force a used while delivering a baby. This unobtrusive device could be used to help identify the safer delivery methods for a complicated birth by minimizing the potential for injury. The students, who worked with Dr. Edith Gurewitsch from the School of Medicine’s Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, were named finalists in the prestigious National Collegiate Inventors Competition for this invention. Two of the students and Dr. Robert Allen from Biomedical Engineering have filed for a patent for their device.
